The IBC Model

A six-behavior model, Integrity-Based Communications,* is the foundation module for everything we do, whether three 1/2-day modules for Medtronic Spine’s LeaderME, one-to-one coaching for leaders preparing to present at association meetings and conferences, or half- to multi-day leadership workshops.
Our train-the-trainer program will roll out in Spring 2017 to certify those who want to empower internal trainers inside their organizations, and trainer-coaches who want to expand their offerings.

*based on Shelley Baur’s books Integrity-Based Communications: Using Truth to Get What You Really Want (2004) and Integrity-Based Communications: Using Truth to Build High-Trust Relationships (2013).

Authentic

Each module is designed to engage all learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Dyads, small groups learn through engaging exercises, coaching.

Who. What. Where.

We offer a variety of options when it comes to our curriculum. Whether One-to-One Coaching, Small Group Session, or Large Group Lecture, our philosophy and foundation remain the same.
Besides individual training, we offer small group training (6 participants, half day), and large group training (12+ participants, full day), as well as Webinars (optional recording for later use). IBC can provide a personalized experience for the individual or company, whatever the needs may be.
The duration of training days/sessions depends on the desired outcome of the individual/organization. We normally recommend 3 half-days of 6, ideally 2 weeks apart, with with 2-3 coaching sessions per learner on interim weeks.

Presentation skills – half-day up to multiple-day, based on learner pre-work, self-assessments to customize curriculum for learners. Ideally, each module is designed to reach visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles, usually small groups, with highly interactive, engaging exercises and multiple opportunities for presenting, being recorded, and reviewing before confidential coaching sessions, ½-1 hour in length.

Option: Assessment tool for each attendee to determine best behavioral style training and communications.

Option: Video recording before and after training and skill development.

Executive comes with prepared speech, usually aided by PowerPoint, which I ask them to present straight through, while I video-record (and usually suggest they do so on their own phone for another, private review). We require them to name the actions and initiatives they perceived as strengths, that they liked; what they want to change and how they recommend that it be improved. That informs where they are, and I meet them there, addressing up to 12 specific skill sets and their remedies for practice (not to overwhelm, but ready them for that particular assignment).
Multiple modules in a variety of media. Each employs role-playing, video, coaching. Options include videotaping, live video streaming training, online webinar training and strategies for high levels of interaction, engagement with measurable outcomes. Actions for advanced communication strategies and initiatives that include DISC training for behavioral communication initiatives, generational communication and global elements.
The main component of this training is using the total IBC model as an accountability tool. Teams meet weekly (live, online, or publicly) and share a process that informs, builds deeper understanding of contribution, produces more effective teamwork, and publicly displays transparent accountability.

Real-time, think-on- your-feet communications, in smaller group meetings, include customized role-play scenarios, practiced in groups of four, rotating through target communicator, partner, observer, and scribe/speaker (who reports out to the whole group), usually in rounds of 20 minutes. The desired outcome is for each person to learn how to solve specific problematic situations, as well as other key facilitation skills (listening, observing, note-taking, summarizing, facilitating discussion, giving and receiving feedback) necessary to be an excellent communicator.

Option: Content to include high level of communication strategies that can include NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Behavioral Style Communication Initiatives, Generational Dynamic Instruction for high engagement.

Multiple modules custom-designed for intended purpose of presentation, each strong on presenting, video, coaching. Proprietary presentation formats for effective storytelling development, delivery for high impact.
In every case, learners are given specific, positive feedback so they claim and retain the skills that create success. Allowing each learner to name the place they next want to focus upon (or suggesting an “easy fix” that will eliminate self-sabotaging behavior) is the way we see confidence build more quickly, and the learner is excited to keep progressing.
Two days of content, much of which depends on pre-work interview questions, mainly to uncover life stages, experiences, what was learned, and how that informs the individual’s present values, world view, life mission, purpose, and how to apply all of this to the goals and opportunities at hand. For some people, the best experience is an intensive weekend experience. For others, it’s multiple half-days with coaching in between.

Straightforward Entirely, while nonetheless always respectful, encouraging.

Improv/theatric/creative Yes. I often use stories for relevant examples. In storytelling, media training classes, I’m more improvisational, theatric, and creative than other classes.

Other (please describe) Each module is designed to engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles – usually in small groups, with highly interactive, engaging exercises and multiple opportunities for both extemporaneous and planned presentations; recorded, and reviewed before confidential coaching session.

One-to- one coaching

Small group sessions

Large lecture

Webinars give ongoing “connection” as they can be recorded and used to continue training, refresh, review and as they onboard new employees, a training “library.”

Other (describe):

Small (groups of 6 in half-day)- to larger (12 in whole day) allows for multiple short presentations, from self-introductions to progressively more difficult, linking with
business drivers. After private video review by both coach and learner, coaching is
provided in confidential space.

Depends on desired outcomes and pre-assessments of learners. 3 1/2-days of 6, with 2-3 coaching sessions has proven to be very successful, not only for retention, but for practice and opportunity to apply between half-day sessions (ideally 2 weeks apart, with coaching during interim weeks).
An open, coachable, eager learner who wants to advance his or her career, and is willing to give 100% for self and supporting others to learn and grow as professionals.
Management and leadership can expect to complete the curriculum with advanced skill sets in communication, engagement, and resources, for both personal and professional advancement, engagement, and confidence.

Leaders will acquire skill sets for crisis management, articulate confidently, and manage their message confidently on every media platform.

A simple six-behavior model that is easy to learn, replicate, and teach others to apply in a wide variety of situations. Here's what (retired) David Miller, VP-Strategic Customer Services, Medtronic Spinal & Biologics had this to say:

“Shelley Baur has developed the simplest, most practical, easy-to- apply, effective communication rubric available: Integrity-Based Communications.

“She works in concert with corporate training initiatives to apply Integrity-Based Communications principles, preparing high potential employees for leadership roles and success.

“Shelley teaches how to establish a personal presence whether in front of a group or at an intimate dinner; how to hold an interesting, impactful conversation with an audience, a small group or a single person; how to show respect by listening, getting to the point, and doing what you say…filling the critical gap not covered by speechwriters and image coaches.”

Among the team members: Canada and Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic, Europe, Middle East.

“SIFM was fortunate to have Terri Murphy as a speaker for our inaugural Middle East Leadership Academy, which brings together emerging business leaders from Arabic speaking throughout the Middle East for an extended 10-day program. It was critical for us to make a good first impression in the region, and Terri played an important role in helping us achieve our goal. She connected especially well with our audience prior to her presentations, personalized her program according to their individual circumstances, and delivered her material in a professional, engaging and informative manner. What a delight to have her on our team!

“What Terri did was well beyond what I was expecting, and surpassed every speaker since!”
